FIRST LOOK AT DSPAC'S CUSTOM MOSAIC TILES

We were really excited to recieve progress photos of our custom mural being made for the Dwana Smallwood Performing Arts Center, which is currently under construction in Brooklyn.  The mural was created using parametric inputs to get a desired output similar to voxelization, a 2d representation of a 3d volumetric continuous graphic. The custom image is composed of specialized 10mm X 10mm tiles and is being assembled in Japan.

A preview of one of the many large-format graphics that will adorn the walls of our soon to be opened Harley-Davidson flagship in Manhattan. A team of bikers joined us on the Fulton Ferry Pier here in Brooklyn to capture this killer view of the Manhattan skyline and Brooklyn Bridge.  As part of the environmental graphics we've produced for the dealership, this image will stretch to a massive 38', forming the backdrop for the lower level showroom.

SPREADING THE LIGHT AT BHH II

As rough-in continues, there’ve been a couple of nice developments on the job site.  First the windows have been installed. The clean white oak sashes look fantastic – such an improvement over the old vinyl windows.  Second, after seeing how striking the light is coming in from the skylight, the owners have agreed to widen the opening to the living room on the parlor floor.  During design development we were hoping to remove this wall entirely but the structural work required was just a bit out of budget.  This is a good compromise.

BHH II SKYLIGHTS INSTALLED

This week services are being installed throughout the Boerum Hill House II.  Wiring is being run for electrical, A/V, and data and pipes are laid for the plumbing.  This phase of construction, called 'rough-in', often seems slow moving to the lay eye, as the work being done is subtle and doesn't involve much dramatic spatial change from day to day.  That's why it was exciting today to see the skylights installed above the stairwell.     Look at the difference in these before and after photos!

  On the job site at the Boerum Hill House II this week, framing is complete, which means if you squint your eyes and apply some imagination you can start to see the various rooms and spaces taking shape.

BOERUM HILL HOUSE II DESIGN WALKTHRU

  While framing continues on Boerum Hill House II, we’ll take this opportunity to illustrate the design concept with some drawings and images from our working 3D model.  As mentioned last week, one of the primary drivers for the layout of the floors, was the desire to maximize the light penetrating deep into the center of the floor plates.  This is a typical problem in Brooklyn townhouses.  Front and rear exposures are narrow and long parti walls are shared with neighbors to the sides, leading to dark areas in the core of the building.

BOERUM HILL HOUSE II [BHHII] CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY

This week, JPDA began construction on a new townhouse renovation in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. It’s a single family with 3 floors and just over 1900 sqft in area. The building dates back to the 1890’s, and as is typical with houses of this vintage, it’s suffered through several unsympathetic remodels over the years. The Garden floor and top floor both require gutting. There’s a bit of historic character remaining on the Parlor Floor which we’ll aim to preserve. With a tight timeline and a modest budget, our goal is to deliver a clean, modern, efficient home tailored to the client’s lifestyle.

LIGHT THROUGH THE LAYERS.

Less than 2 months left in our gut rehab of a Park Slope townhouse. These older, narrow Brooklyn townhouses are often dark at their core due to the archetypal configuration of small closed rooms and even smaller front and rear windows. This leads to a feeling of confinement and insularity which our modern minds tell us is wrong. Our solution was to create an enlarged stair opening at each floor to bring light down through to the lowest levels and create a greater connection between the floors.
